Purpose

Interval recording divides observation periods into smaller time intervals and records whether behavior occurred during each interval. This method provides an estimate of behavior occurrence and is practical when continuous recording is not possible.

When to Use This Template

  • For behaviors that are difficult to count discretely
  • When you cannot observe continuously
  • For high-frequency behaviors
  • When estimating behavior occurrence is acceptable
  • For classroom-wide observations

Template Components

This template includes the following fields and sections:

  • Student information
  • Behavior definition
  • Interval length (e.g., 10 seconds, 1 minute)
  • Recording type (whole, partial, momentary)
  • Observation grid with intervals
  • Percentage calculation section
  • Notes for qualitative data

Best Practices

1

Choose interval length based on typical behavior duration

2

Use whole interval for underestimate (conservative)

3

Use partial interval for overestimate

4

Use momentary time sampling for extended observations

5

Practice timing before collecting data
