Understanding these foundational terms is essential for informed decision-making about inclusive education.

Inclusion

The practice of educating students with disabilities alongside their non-disabled peers in general education classrooms and school activities to the maximum extent appropriate, with necessary supports and services.

LRE - Least Restrictive Environment

A core IDEA principle requiring that students with disabilities be educated with non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate. Removal occurs only when education in general classes with supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily.

FAPE - Free Appropriate Public Education

Special education and related services provided at public expense, meeting state standards, and provided in conformity with each student's IEP. Must provide meaningful educational benefit (Endrew F. standard).
